Frequently Asked Questions About Our Bengal Kittens
Answers to the Most Common Questions for Future Bengal Owners
Bengal Kitten & Cat FAQs
A Bengal is no classic housecat. These beautiful animals are some of the finest cats in the world and provide our clients with years of laughter and love. However, these cats are a little particular, and we get a ton of questions about these amazing animals. So, we thought it was best to put the most frequent questions in one spot once and for all.
How long do Bengal cats live?
A typical Bengal cat will live between 12 and 16 years, depending on a few factors including genetics, the environment, breeding practices and nutrition. It is not uncommon for these cats to live well into their teens and early twenties, provided they are properly cared for and physically exercised.
How big do Bengal cats get?
We often get asked what the average size of a Bengal cat is, and it will really depend on the King and Queen that mate. However, on average, you should expect female Bengals to weigh between eight and 15 pounds. In comparison, male cats will reach up to 22 pounds. In terms of length, Bengals will normally be between 13 and 16 inches.
What is Bengal glitter?
Bengal glitter, also known as the glitter gene, is a genetic trait found only in Bengal cats, which gives their fur a sparkling appearance. The actual science behind it is that the Bengals have hollow, translucent hair shafts that can reflect light that makes their coats appear to shimmer. It should be noted that not all Bengals have this gene.
Where are Bengal cats originally from?
Although you would think that Bengal cats are originally from Africa or Asia, the Bengal cat is actually a breed that originated right here in the United States. The Bengal cat was a designer breed at the time and was created when breeders in the United States cross-bred an Asian Leopard Cat with a domestic cat. The name of the Bengal cat actually pays homage to this history, as it is derived from the Latin name of the Asian Leopard, Felis Bengalensis.
Are Bengal cats high maintenance?
Yes, Bengal cats can be considered high-maintenance kitties. Bengals have higher than average energy levels and require physical and emotional stimulation such as puzzle toys, climbing structures and interactive play. Kittens and adult cats alike will be vocal, and their strong prey drive makes these cats great mousers if you are looking for that.
Are you TICA certified?
Yes, our cats are fully certified by The International Cat Association (TICA), and all of our kittens for sale are TICA certified.
Are Bengal cats hypoallergenic?
Bengal cats are not truly hypoallergenic, but they are considered to be low-allergen cats for those who have cat allergies. The reason for this is that Bengals naturally produce a lower Fel d 1 protein level than other breeds of cat. This protein is the main culprit of cat allergies and is found in cat dander, saliva and urine. Additionally, Bengals do not shed as much as other cats, which also helps with some allergy sufferers.
What can you feed Bengal cats?
Our Bengal cats do not require a special food, nor do they need a special diet to remain healthy and happy. For most Bengals, a normal cat food is perfectly fine. However, some do prefer to feed premium food, including a raw diet, but for the vast majority of Bengals, this is unnecessary.
What is the difference between show, breed and pet quality Bengal cats?
Bengal cats are normally classed as one of the following: show, breed or pet quality. Show-quality Bengals are the pinnacle of the breed standards, exhibiting exceptional temperament and appearance. Generally, these kitties are the most expensive to adopt or buy, and are able to be shown in cat shows nationally. Breeding quality Bengals are cats that are able to produce kittens that are close to the breed standard. These kittens are chosen for their coat pattern, markings, body structure and temperament. Finally, pet quality Bengals might have some small deficiencies, such as uneven patterns or minor color variations and make the perfect house cat, but just not for breeding or cat shows.
When can I take my Bengal cat home?
When can I take my Bengal cat home?
Here at NW Bengal, you can take your Bengal kitten home when it is between 12 and 14 weeks old. The reason for this is that it takes some time to wean the kitten off its mom’s milk and gives us time to vaccinate and socialize the cat to humans and other animals.
How do I know if there are any kittens available?
You can tell there are kittens for sale on our kittens page, which is updated regularly. You can also send us an email at any time, and we will provide you with the latest updates, including available cats for sale or adoption, and plans for our breeding program.
Are males or females better companions?
Unlike other cats, Bengals do not have sex-related tendencies when it comes to companionship. Rather, the specific temperament will depend on individual preferences and how well the breeder socialized the cat. Both sexes are known to have a strong desire to create a bond, and there is generally little difference between male and female Bengals in this regard.
Do Bengal cats get along with kids?
Bengal cats get along well with children, and to make sure there is a positive start to the relationship, it is best to manage introductions and interactions carefully. Bengals are a playful breed, but some cats can play a little rough, which is important to correct early on with children in the home.
Do Bengal cats get along with other animals, such as cats or dogs?
Bengal cats are a great cat breed if you are looking to introduce a new cat to existing cats or dogs in your home. Bengals are playful in nature and will want to interact with your animals. So, careful supervision of the introduction and first few play sessions will be important to ensure that everyone, including your new Bengal kitten, will be playing safely.
